Lisbeth Illum, MPharm PhD DSc

Professor Illum has 35 years’ industrial and academic experience in drug delivery. She was the founder and, for 12 years, the Managing Director of DanBioSyst UK Ltd (now part of West Pharmaceuticals), and the Managing Director of Phaeton Research Ltd.

Professor Illum is currently the Director of IDentity, a drug delivery consultancy company, the CEO of Critical Pharmaceuticals and a Special Professor at the University of Nottingham’s School of Pharmacy. She has also consulted for several multinational pharmaceutical companies.

Awarded an MPharm, PhD and DSc from the Royal Danish School of Pharmacy in 1972, 1978 and 1988 respectively, her research expertise covers novel drug delivery systems for difficult drugs – such as polar small molecular weight compounds, and peptides and proteins. She has studied novel delivery approaches for drugs using transmucosal routes (nasal, oral and vaginal).

Professor Illum has lectured throughout the world. She has published more than 300 scientific papers and co-edited four books including Peptide Drug Delivery Systems. Professor Illum has filed nearly 50 patents on novel drug delivery systems and either is or used to be on the editorial boards of seven scientific journals, including the Journal of Pharmaceutical Science and Pharmaceutical Research.

Among several scientific awards, Professor Illum was awarded title of Docent by the Royal Danish School of Pharmacy, and in 2007 picked up the Eurand Career Achievement Award. She has been elected a Fellow of the AAPS and was the President of the Controlled Release Society in 2008.
