With over 35 years’ pharmaceutical research experience, Dr Lancaster spent the majority of his career with Glaxo (later GlaxoWellcome and then GlaxoSmithKline).

During his time there he developed a specialist role studying polymorphism and crystallisation issues. His early career was spent working in the Physical Chemistry department as an analytical chemist, where he developed a particular interest in chemical spectroscopy (IR and NMR).

Dr Lancaster started his postgraduate studies in 1979, working with Professor Norman Sheppard at the University of East Anglia. He studied polymorphism in small organic molecules and then in potential drug molecules.

Later, Dr Lancaster moved into the pharmaceutical development area where he worked as a solid state problem solver, covering all stages of the drug discovery process, from research to production. In recent years his role has included intellectual property litigation.

He currently holds honorary research fellowships at University College London and the University of Durham. The focus of his research is practical crystallisation and predictive studies (UCL) and solid state NMR (Durham). He also has interests in using new and emerging technologies that may be of potential use in studies of polymorphism and related subjects.
